Career in Classical Music
Ian Mayton began his tenure with the Houston Symphony in 2015 under the baton of Andrés Orozco-Estrada. Ian has also performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the North Carolina Symphony. After completing his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Ian spent a year studying with William VerMeulen at Rice University before winning his position with the Houston Symphony.
Private Lessons
Ian has been teaching horn in the Houston area since he started with the Houston Symphony, including private lessons, horn sectionals, brass masterclasses, and chamber music coaching.
Ian’s teaching approach is rooted in building the fundamentals of good brass playing through musical expression, not the other way around. Lessons will challenge students to make musical decisions and focus their energy on creating beautiful sound, resulting in developing playing abilities and aural skills. Students who approach the horn this way get more enjoyment out of playing the horn, and realize rapid results with performing and auditioning.
